This is a letter from Prince Cinders to Fairy Godmother asking for help. This is a good book to use for the Traditional stories unit for Year 2 and supports the Talk For Writing literacy approach. You will find an exemplar text for children to imitate and learn with all the grammar features of the year 2 curriculum including those to achieve Greater Depth. Good examples of features include, suffixes, contractions, exclamatory sentences, compound words, common exception words, apostrophe for possession, and expanded noun phrases. Children can then move on to innovating their own letter and then move on to the invention stage. Can also be used in guided reading to support the same genre.

Year 2 Reading and Writing- poetry New English Curriculum This fabulous resources has an array of classic poetry with comprehensions. The sound collector has differentiated comprehension for higher ability (working at greater depth) and then differentiated down so that all the class can access and enjoy classic poetry. Children answer literal, inference and evaluative questions about the poem. After that , they spend a day creating their own verses using similar pattern structures. There are also other many fun and enjoyable poems to learn and perform by Roger McGough, and Valerie Bloom- such as The River, and other sound poems. Children can recite these, perform them and offer opinions about them. Children will learn how to identify rhyming words and generate their own. They will understand language techniques used by the poet and create their own verse. This resource can also be used as a poetry unit during English main teaching or guided reading. This resource helps pupils to write a free verse using inspiration from the old lady that helped Ivan on his quest. Instructional writing about how to grow peas -differentiated for working below, working at and working at greater depth. Good examples of all grammar features included, such as varied sentence types, and varied punctuation. Can be used for cross -curricular work in science topic or as an additional text type to teach the features of instructional writing to children during guided reading. The instructions have been organised into paragraphs with visuals and differentiated for learners. There are also comprehension questions attached so that children can demonstrate greater understanding of the text.

Punctuation signs with corresponding bands for each band. Includes supporting vocabulary e.g when each punctuation should be used e.g commas in a list or apostrophe for possession or apostrophe for words with contracted form. This is an excellent visual and reminder for students and will support children to work at the expected band and at greater depth in KS1 and above. Excellent way of children self assessing and or editing. Can be easily adapted to suit all key stages. Very bright and engaging resource. Useful to be laminated and arranged to look like a pyramid. Band 2 Working below: full stop at the top of pyramid. Band 2 Working At: full stop, question mark, exclamation mark and apostrophe for contraction. Band 2 Greater Depth: as above including apostrophe for possession and commas in a list.

SPAG Rainbow Writing Code supports the Year 2 Grammar Washing Line. Please see the shop. The code is to support children to edit their writing using the same colour each time. They locate each grammar feature in a given exemplar text and use colour pencils to identify them and/or underline them. Over the year the children can self assess and peer assess using this rainbow grammar code. Eventually, by the end of the year, the aim is for the children to be able to identify all the writing grammar features in their own writing or up level it and edit if they haven’t. VCHOP stands for Vocabulary, Conjunctions, Handwriting, Openers and Punctuation. This resources supports the new National Curriculum for 2014 English Writing objectives.

Activities suitable for Year 2 and Year 3. Grammar features to suit the new curriculum have been included such as using expanded noun phrases, suffix endings- ier, subordinating conjunction 'if'. A must for all pupils to understand the correct formation Leaving spaces in between words understand middle size letters and shape of capitals Make sure that ascenders go under the lines and ascenders go up.

Year 2 English Writing Unit This is a unit of work based on Monsters and a short clip. There are two weeks of English Fiction planning that incorporates immersion activities, imagination ideas, and opportunities for children to write simple poetry about feelings of fear. The unit then moves on to watching the short clip and planning ideas for a narrative. Children describe the monster, where it has come from and write their own adventure story. ‘The day I found monster under my bed.’ The resources includes ideas of how to use the monster theme for topic work including DT and making a pesky monster punch drink, and thinking of ideas about how to trap a monster. Please also additional linked resources called ‘How to trap a wild thing.’ in the shop for Instructions only. Their are also ideas for monster ink art and science inflatable monsters ideas in the Powerpoint. It is considered useful to set children a holiday task/project before the unit commences and this has also been included.

This document is to support teachers with feedback and marking. There is an example Powerpoint of good quality feedback and the pedagogy behind it - with children's work, next step marking, self assessment ideas and positive feedback language. There is also a bank of 'Next Step Marking' ideas that have been created to support teachers in their feedback to children that allow independence in revising their work. If marking is over explicit, then parts of the writing may be disqualified. It is highly recommended not to over mark and train children to understand teacher feedback e.g. Use varied sentences for effect on the reader/audience (means that the child has to use questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences). The detail in brackets is displayed in the classroom and given as verbal feedback to child. They then go away and improve their writing accordingly. This documents will give you more open bank of statements to use in your next steps (so moderators can't say the feedback was too explicit), and not use that piece of work as evidence for the child meeting the expected criteria (or above greater depth).
